I am experiencing the same problem, I found the card in lspci listing it is listed as:
0000:01:07.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (rev 11)

So the system has detected the card but seems to fail to detect the sound part, even though the bttv module indicates it loads a sound driver:
Jan 17 11:22:08 localhost kernel: [4294694.115000] bt878: AUDIO driver version 0.0.0 loaded
Jan 17 11:22:08 localhost kernel: [4294694.117000] bt878: Bt878 AUDIO function found (0).
Jan 17 11:22:08 localhost kernel: [4294694.117000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:07.1[A] -> Link [APC2] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
Jan 17 11:22:08 localhost kernel: [4294694.117000] bt878(0): Bt878 (rev 17) at 01:07.1, irq: 17, latency: 32, memory: 0xfeafe000

I tried the suggestion to load the driver with the load_all parameter, unlike Nyp Nobody I do not get an error message. But in the asound directory there still is no extra card. I know it is not a hardware failure, as the card works perfectly with windows and tv play also works under linux.

My other sound card, is a Soudblaster Live! 24-bit which is a onboard soundcard on my MSI K8N Diamond board. That card is detected correctly and seems to work without a flaw. I am using ALSA version 1.0.11rc2, installed on a Ubuntu Breezy with a k7 kernel.

The only thing that might explain this is that according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems?highlight=%28alsa%29 the format for the audio devices should be

"$ lspci -v and lspnp -v, look for lines like this:
0000:01:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
or
06 ESS1878 multimedia controller: audio"

Which is not the case for the bt87x device

The load_all parameter exists since ALSA 1.0.7 (see /proc/asound/version).
What is the output of "modinfo snd_bt87x"?
