I'm on OpenSUSE 10 with alsa-1.0.9-23 and esound-0.2.36-3 installed.
"Alsaconf" correctly detects my sound card (I can hear the demo sound)
and pmidi runs & plays timidity successfully, at least.
But I'm having a couple problems with my configuration:
1) /dev/dsp does not exist on my system;
2) when I type "esd" I get the following:

snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device

ALSA lib confmisc.c:955:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3493:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer
returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3962:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2094:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
