Hi there!

I've got several problems with my on-(ASRock K7VT2-)board sound
controller. It's a VIA8235. It's just a stereo output, a stereo input
and a microphone in. The motherboard has also a MIDI-Connector. I have a
mpu401 and mpu401-uart module loaded for this. I'm using Debian Etch
(testing) with the ALSA-Version 1.0.9rc2.

Here's what I found out:

1) Doom3 sounds like a very digital effect is switched between the
application and the output, a bit like an audio cd hangs. Or like an old
C64-car-game (with a quite good 16bit-sound). The sound of
Planetpenguin-Racer does work, however.

2) ESD doesn't work on gnome, although the sound server is activated in
the audio preferences. No sound app can play audio files on the
esd-output, but alsa-output works. Funny: "esdplay" doesn't seem to have
a problem and works.

3) Every mixer-app shows "3D Control Center" and "3D Control Depth" twice.

4) /proc/asound/devices:

 17: [0- 1]: digital audio playback
 25: [0- 1]: digital audio capture
 16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback
 24: [0- 0]: digital audio capture
  0: [0- 0]: ctl
  1: : sequencer
 40: [1- 0]: raw midi
 32: [1- 0]: ctl
 33: : timer

/proc/asound/pcm:

00-00: VIA 8235 : VIA 8235 : playback 4 : capture 1
00-01: VIA 8235 : VIA 8235 : playback 1 : capture 1

/proc/asound/timers:

G0: system timer : 1000.000us (10000000 ticks)
P0-0-0: PCM playback 0-0-0 : SLAVE
P0-0-1: PCM capture 0-0-1 : SLAVE
P0-0-2: PCM playback 0-0-2 : SLAVE
P0-0-4: PCM playback 0-0-4 : SLAVE
P0-0-6: PCM playback 0-0-6 : SLAVE
P0-1-0: PCM playback 0-1-0 : SLAVE
P0-1-1: PCM capture 0-1-1 : SLAVE

I haven't got that much experience with alsa configurations, but to me
it looks like there are 1 1/2 soundcards activated and configured. Maybe
an old config is partly active - I have thrown out a Terratec
Soundsystem DMX recently. (I thought, it worked quite good after that.
I'm sure, ESD did!)

What I have done:

1) Reinstalled the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages.
2) removed the mpu401 module.

So:

I guess, there's a bug in the debian configuration and I would like to
report it. But first, I have to find out (with a little help from my
alsa-mailinglist) what's going on.

Thanks for your help!

Mitsch
