There's a fat note at the top which says: NOTE: For ALSA 1.0.9rc2 and higher you don't need to setup dmix. Dmix is enabled as default for soundcards which don't support hw mixing. Feel free to make this even clearer and to correct any mistakes in the rest of the document. Personally I don't use dmix so I admit that I'm not really up to date with the current situation.
