That's a good observation.  The kernel included with Sarge, 2.6.8 comes with 
ALSA drivers 1.0.4 and it appears that support for the Audigy II 6.1 Value 
(SB0400) didn't make it into ALSA until 1.0.8.  That being said, I'd already 
upgraded my kernel to 2.6.15.4 which comes with ALSA version 1.0.10rc3.
