Is that so? I have: (from lspci)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 
AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

In my experience, when I installed the system about 1.5 or 2 years ago, I 
really did have to install dmix (never tried it without since then..).

Are we speaking about the same chip?

(Btw, speaking of alsa underruns, I never noticed any problems..)
