I am unable to play mu-law files. If I try

aplay file.wav

I get the error message

aplay: test_wavefile:726: can't play not PCM-coded WAVE-files

I get the same error if I try, e.g., aplay -f MU_LAW file.wav.

I've tried to define an .asoundrc entry, but I get similar errors. Furthermore I find that VoIP applications such as Kphone and Twinkle are unable to play mu-law data streams -- I have to use OSS compatibility mode.

Questions:

(1) Is there some problem with MU-LAW in the latest version of Alsa? I'm using Debian 2.6.15-1-k7 on an ASUS via82xx-based mobo.

(2) Can someone provide a complete example of how to create a plugin for Alsa, and how it would be used? I have read the documentation, which says that "type mulaw" can translate from linear to mu-law and back -- but there's no hint whatsoever on how to accomplish either of those anywhere in the documentation.

As far as I can tell, it should be possible to use .asoundrc and alsa so that aplay would automatically play either a linear or mu-law encoded file. But I can't tell how.
