Yes, I found out it's supposed to work.

I first set my HDSP Multiface II to 48k internal clock: 

amixer cset numid=11,iface=PCM,name='Sample Clock Source' 3

Then I had 3 files; one 44.1k, one 48k and one 96k. It played them all
perfectly.

So, there is a bug. When the clock of the Multiface II is at 96k, the
plug:jack does not work; it won't play back other sampling rates - it
just stutters a second and exits.
