OK, I'll review this at leisure. Some points for the time being:-

1) It works after a fashion under the old wss modules, (but with a rather horrid resources list for modprobe)

Yes, it would work. The WSS part of the chip is also enabled correctly through the ALSA driver. The CMI8330 ALSA driver uses the SB interface for playback and (as a duplex hack) the WSS interface for capture. It would be possible to just use the WSS interface (simplex) and not enable the SB interface at all. The SB interface is the better one though.

2) I only 'moved up' to ALSA to try to avoid the buffer over-runs in SKYPE.

Duplex is something you really need for skype, I guess?

3) I had thought that 'alsaconf' was meant to circumvent these hours of
headscratching over dma etc :-)

ISA-PnP was. Or better yet, PCI was ;-) But as said, if there are simply not enough resurces such as 8-bit DMA channels available in the machine for all the installed hardware there's nothing anyone can do about it. The legacy PC only provides 3 8-bit DMA channels, and 10 "free" IRQ lines...

4) I tried 2.6 IIRC and didn't seems to get any further

5)'Things shall not be multiplied without necessity'

I'd say this crap (to a non-admirer that is; personally I love it ;-) points to necessity. Why don't you take out this resource heavy card and put in either some other old ISA-PnP card if you have one (I'd advice a Crystal CS423{6,7,9} card -- tons of those around and they generally sound nice-ish) or just any supported PCI card?

Thanks for your help so far

Ofcourse, the CMI8330 could work as well. One thing to note; my reply with the resource details did not mean you should need to care about setting these resources. Quite the contrary in fact -- if you force settings with the sb* parameters, don't do that. Things should just work then and if not, there's a resource shortage.

Rene.
