Thanks! I really should have checked that better. The problem was that I in fact didn't have alsa-lib 1.0.11 installed, only 1.0.10. I don't understand how that happened, I'm sure I checked it... Anyway, you gave me the idea that solved the problem. Dmix now works. I put a RATE=44100 in the "strings" part of the conf, and that works fine too.
