I applied the patch to my /etc/alsa/cards/ICH4.conf and rebooted
I get the same error from mplayer and a similar error from Xine:
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1107:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition
'cards.ICH4.pcm.iec958.4:CARD=0,AES0=2,AES1=130,AES2=0,AES3=2'
ALSA lib conf.c:3492:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer
returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib conf.c:3961:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such file or
directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2099:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM iec958:{CARD 0
AES0 0x02 AES1 0x82 AES2 0x00 AES3 0x02}
My system is running :

on a Asus P4P800-E DELUXE with the Realtek Ac97 onboard soundcard,
Using alsa version : 1.0.11
alsa-utils.i386 1.0.11-4.rc2 installed
alsa-lib-devel.i386 1.0.11-3.rc2.2 installed
alsa-lib.i386 1.0.11-3.rc2.2 installed
alsa-driver-devel.i386 1.0.11-46_rc5.rhfc5.at installed

This card is working with the same config for mythtv but not xine or
mplayer
You should write more details on your system if you want to ask about
a problem on your system.
Anyway, try the patch below.
