Hi. I am new to this list and new to ALSA. I am very excited about using ALSA and was hoping that someone here might be able to provide some help.

I wrote an application using all of the recommended functions specified by the two tutorials posted on the ALSA web site under "Developer tutorials". However, I have not been able to successfully open a PCM device for capture (or playback or anything else). The "PCM name" specified under Dr. Nagorni's tutorial seems to be a very unusual way of naming a device. In his tutorial, he mentions that "plughw:0,0" might be appropriate. I tried exactly that and am not seeming to get anywhere. My guess is that the actual name is generated somehow by the snd_pcm_open utility.

I have a number of devices in my /dev/snd/ directory but none are called "plughw". How is an appropriate PCM device's name formed?

- Bruce

P.S. If it helps any, I have an ASUS A8N motherboard that uses the nVidia nForce4 chips for sound.
