I am currently using Fedora Core 5, but I have experienced the same
phenomenon with the latest Ubuntu and Debian, so I feel I need to direct
my question here.
On my machine ( Asus A7N8E Deluxe with Nforce2 chipset) the sound
support is working, but the sound quality is quite horrible. It is like
I am listening to mp3's of 64Kb quality.
If I pop in a Knoppix Live cd, which uses OSS (or at least not Alsa)
the sound is perfect. I also have Windows on this machine and no bad
sound quality whatsoever. The hardware is ah-ok.
Since the Alsa support is actually working and it is stable, I feel that
it is a configuration issue somehow. Hopefully not in the kerneldrivers.
I am new to Fedora so I am not sure how it is doing everything, but I am
trying to get you the correct required information so you can properly
advise me.
Kernel: both 2.6.15.* and 2.6.16.*
Alsa-lib: 1.0.10.*
Alsa-utils: 1.0.11.*
I am busy learning linux the hard way and have built a system from
scratch as well. (www.linuxfromscratch.org) This is on different
hardware though. I didn't have to configure anything Alsa wise there,
expect unmuting the channels, to have it work great, so the various
configuration files are a bit of a mystery to me.
I did check them out, but I didn't see anything obviously wrong.
The things I can set with xmms for example, are the size of the buffers,
which is not an issue here. I read somewhere that the nforce2 chipset
internally 'works' at 48kHz. Perhaps the sound is being downsampled?
I lack audio terminology, I know.
Thanks in advance, Warren
