Greetings everybody;
I am the not so proud owner of an HP Pavilion dv5320us lappy, with this
audio chipset in it.
This is an amd64 turion cpu, but its a fully uptodate i386 version of
FC5 thats installed on it, which includes the alsa-1.0.11-rc3? drivers.
From all indications, this chipset is incapable of doing full duplex
operation. Skype. ekiga, audacity, grip are some of the programs that
only half run on it. Grip cannot play an audio cd, not a peep, but it
can rip it, albeit at very poor results as the digital level is too high
and there is lots of overload distortion in the playback of the files it
has ripped. Audacity says the average level of a rip to ogg is about
-2db. It should be more like -16 to -20 for decent headroom.
Skype and ekiga both transmit to the other end very well, but the other
end can, or cannot be heard depending on the mood its in, it will work
for 5 minutes for skype occasionally, but then dissolve into a repeating
echo at about 10 repeats per second, of maybe a milliseconds worth of
the incoming audio. This pretty much renders skype/ekiga worthless as I
can't hear the other party.
Going to audacity, it can record, then playback very nicely, but if I
switch on the 'play previous while recording new', or the 'play while
recording' check marks, then the recording is great, as is the
recordings mixes, but any simultainious playback is broken up just as
its done in skype or ekiga. Play only works fine.
When this effect is being heard, no amount of adjusting gain controls
anyplace in alsamixer or kmix has any effect over and above controlling
the level I hear in the headphones, this stuttering effect, and what
little of the other ends voice I can occasionally hear, all goes up and
down in level together. In kmix, the mics red led is on and the greeen
one is off, if I turn on the green one then I can hear myself of course,
and that sound great, but thats not how full duplex is supposed to work.
Turning on the green led also has no effect on whats heard on the
other end, still crystal clear.
Is this a bug in the alsa drivers, or is this ATI-IXP chipset a known POS?
And, what can I do to help pin this down? The lack of skypeout alone is
costing me about $150 a month in cellphone fees out here in the wilds of
the Michigan UP.
