The point about mailing lists and what many of us love about them is having all discusions centralised around one only application, your email client. In my case I use mutt so I can track lots of different mailing lists with no need to put a hand over the mouse. I also like forums but sadly RSS is still not popular between them. If all forum software supported RSS so I could track all of them via a single aggregator, maybe I'd forgot about mailing lists...
