DVD was *much* better, almost identical to normal TV level, so I
investigated further and found out that the IVTV volume (Hauppage PVR250
tuner) was being reset to 80% everytime I started liveTV or scheduled a
recording.

Investigating that fact (using google and mythtv.org) I found that there
was a change in the system, and tuner volume was being set in the
recording profiles. Reset the profiles to use 100% volume on the tuner,
and now the live tv volume is virtually the same as when using the tv
tuner...

Problem solved!  ;-)
