Yes, the Midisport 4x4 needs firmware. You can get the complete
package with installer at
http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/
If you have a recent Kernel with udev get the 1.2 package.

Because the firmware is copyrighted by Midiman/M-Audio under terms
which don't allow to distribute them with ALSA.
ALSA *does* support this device as the complete device is
plain hardware *plus* firmware.

Yes, the Firmware is essential.

For your appeasement, I own an M-Audio Keystation (has an integrated
Midisport 1x1) which needs this firmaware too and it works like charm.
(Though with recent Kernel/udev there seem to be some problems with 
coldplugging, so currently my device has to be switched off and on again
to be recognized if I had booted with device on)
