It does work, though my machine (Athlon XP1900+) is not powerful enough, rather, I didn't try to do all the possible tweaks, so out of the box it is not powerful enough. The suggestion, of course, is a workaround, not a real solution. By the way, QEMU emulates different audio HW (ES1371), so maybe even modern kernel + ALSA + Skype will work.
