That may be the case, but all the aftermarket cards I've heard
recently, even from games oriented companies like Creative, seem to
manage it. The noise floors on the better cards (I'm still talking
about ~$50) have been, by domestic hi-fi standards, v.good for a
number of years. Further up the scale RME and the like are widely
used, I understand, in the professional arena.  Just dissapointed to
see integrated sound is so far behind, vs. PCI cards.

IIRC there's a chaintech card for ~$20 which measures superbly and has
a 24bit 196khz dac. Not that with 44/16 source material that is
particuarly useful...
