Install alsa-utils and set the mixer levels with alsamixer. The default is muted because this setting is guaranteed not to blow up the speakers. There should be some scripts to call "alsactl restore" after the drivers have been loaded and "alsactl store" when the system is shut down. The first can be done with udev.
