Hi Folks, My new MSI L725 laptop is configured with the Intel8x0 driver using alsaconf and release 1.0.12, and the driver loads successfully and looks like it should work. Unfortunately, there is no sound. I have tried several of the remedies I have seen discussed on various lists, with no change or improvement.
Before I go into details, can someone tell me if this is the right place to describe this problem? Would it be better to go to bugtrack.alsa-project.org and open a new bug report for this problem? If I attach a headphone to the laptop's headphone jack, I can hear very faint sound. I have read descriptions of very similar problems specific to the hda-intel driver, but none of the remedies described for those problems had any affect on my system. I have tried: 1. Running alsamixer and attempting every combination of mute/unmute, switch external amplifier on/off, raise lower volume on all controls - no change 2. Tried each ac97_quirk value from -1 through 7 - no change 3. Running speaker-test to the front panel headphone jack - device is always busy 4. Building and installing version 1.0.12 of alsa-driver, alsa-library, alsa-utilities - no change Some specifics: Distribution: Ubuntu dapper Computer: MSI L725 Laptop > ALSA Audio Debug v0.1.0 - Tue Aug 22 15:50:50 EDT 2006 > http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=aadebug > http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt > > Kernel ---------------------------------------------------- > Linux hostname 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Thu Aug 3 02:52:00 UTC 2006 i686 > GNU/Linux > > Loaded Modules -------------------------------------------- > snd_intel8x0 33692 3 > snd_ac97_codec 93088 1 snd_intel8x0 > snd_ac97_bus 2304 1 snd_ac97_codec > snd_pcm_oss 53664 0 > snd_mixer_oss 18688 1 snd_pcm_oss > snd_pcm 89864 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss > snd_timer 25220 2 snd_pcm > snd 55268 10 > snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer > snd_page_alloc 10632 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm > > Modprobe Conf --------------------------------------------- > Warning: module config file does not exist > This means any kernel modules will not be auto loaded > See your linux distro docs on how to create this file > > Proc Asound ----------------------------------------------- > Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10rc3 (Mon Nov 07 > 13:30:21 2005 UTC). > 0 [ICH6 ]: ICH4 - Intel ICH6 > Intel ICH6 with ALC655 at 0xf2eff800, irq 233 > 20: [0- 4]: digital audio playback > 27: [0- 3]: digital audio capture > 26: [0- 2]: digital audio capture > 25: [0- 1]: digital audio capture > 16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback > 24: [0- 0]: digital audio capture > 0: [0- 0]: ctl > 33: : timer > cat: /proc/asound/hwdep: No such file or directory > 00-00: Intel ICH : Intel ICH6 : playback 1 : capture 1 > 00-01: Intel ICH - MIC ADC : Intel ICH6 - MIC ADC : capture 1 > 00-02: Intel ICH - MIC2 ADC : Intel ICH6 - MIC2 ADC : capture 1 > 00-03: Intel ICH - ADC2 : Intel ICH6 - ADC2 : capture 1 > 00-04: Intel ICH - IEC958 : Intel ICH6 - IEC958 : playback 1 > cat: /proc/asound/seq/clients: No such file or directory > > Dev Snd --------------------------------------------------- > controlC0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1c pcmC0D2c pcmC0D3c pcmC0D4p timer > > CPU ------------------------------------------------------- > model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz > cpu MHz : 1729.770 > > RAM ------------------------------------------------------- > MemTotal: 1035968 kB > SwapTotal: 1381548 kB > > Hardware -------------------------------------------------- > 0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML > Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 04) > 0000:00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation > 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04) Thanks to anyone who can get me started in the right direction.
