That is probably because, as I have discovered first-hand and also been told by
others with much more expertise, the hda-intel chip is a total peice of shit.
I solved my hda-intel problems by blowing off the hda-intel entirely, and
getting a firewire audio interface instead. I'm told that the PCI ones are even
better.
