It is just at a hardware synth must be able to load and unload the sounds from the soundfont at least as fast as they must be changed during the play. An USB bus don't have enough bandwidth to do that (even an audigy 2 when used with huge soundfonts cannot do that correctly on the PCI bus) . It is why no one USB sound card on the market do have an hardware synth.
