This should not be if you made sure you loaded the snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss modules (udev should've created the /dev/dsp node). In any case -- I am afraid I'll have to refrain from further attempts unless you can find a functional OSS player at this point yourself since especially with the latency between ourselves, this is otherwise getting impossible to debug.
