Starting xmms
In preferences, changing to alsa.
Try to play a song:
error:  "Couldn't open audio.  Please check that:  
your soundcard is configured properly, 
you have the correct output plugin selected, no other program is
blocking the soundcard"

Rebooting.

less /var/log/boot= Saved ALSA mixer settings detected; 
aumix will not touch mixer.

Running Main kde menu>Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System>
hardware tab>ALSA from drop-down list>Apply
automatic sound system restart is successful

running alsamixer: only shows usb webcam mic
(don't know how to change devices in alsamixer)

running alsaconf:
shows PCI soundcard Ensoniq AudioPCI and all mixer 
settings are un-muted and nominal

Running Main kde menu>Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System>
test sound
silence

starting xmms:  no errors

starting a song:  song plays but with silence.

That's all I can think of for now, Rene.
