I've been banging my head against this problem for some time now, and
I haven't been able to find a solution. I have a Mach Speed MSNV-939
motherboard with onboard 5.1 channel sound. lspci -vv reports:

There are three jacks: line-out (front), line-in/rear,
microphone/center+lfe. I have speakers plugged into all three jacks,
but "speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c 6" produces sound only in the
front channels (the line-out jack).

The "ac97_quirk" text was something that I thought I try out after
seeing some documentation on snd-intel8x0, but it doesn't seem to have
made any difference.
