dmix is active by default for the "default" sound devices, but by design jackd bypasses these and talks directly to the hardware which will prevent other apps from using it. jackd is really not intended to be used on a system with non-JACK apps using the soundcard. If you really want this to work, configure jackd to use the "default:0" PCM rather than "hw:0", but your JACK latency will suffer.
