Assuming that you are trying to resolve a driver issue, you only need to
install the driver package. You can leave all the userspace stuff – the
libraries etc – as they are. You will have to recompile your kernel
though, before you build and install the drivers themselves, in order to
make sure that you don't have two sets of drivers conflicting with each
other.
