That is strange. You should definitely report a bug to CentOS about
this.

Does it give an error message or just a black background?

Is `alsamixer --help` working?

All major distributions (e. g. Debian live) have a live image you can
boot a from USB medium or CD/DVD.

KNOPPIX is also very popular [2].
