I had problems since the 295.something, so its not particularly this
last version. I also tried some older kernel/driver combinations and
still nothing.

Yes, but only after I have a better idea that their driver is the
culprit, since at this point I still don't have it, and hence my
question on how to get more detailed traces on what's happening in the
whole audio pipeline.

And Nvidia's HDMI audio guide is also useless, since it is also
centered in the codec probing and basic mixer troubleshooting.
