I was thinking EEPROM, but I guess some cards also have RAM which has to be
initialized on every power cycle.
As far as x86 goes,I tried Ubuntu 10.10/1.0.23 and it worked like stated
on the vendor matrix page, but only with a live disk -
VM had stutter / was completely distorted. It might also be noteworthy that
one of the Direct Monitor LEDs sometimes
comes on when the driver is loaded or unloaded.
