Media Advisory 03 April 2006 Under 23 Softballers to Slide 2006 Championships to a Close! The Under 23 event will cap off the last of the annual Australian Fastpitch Championships for 2006, to end what has been one of the best softball competitions Australia has seen. Since 1 January 2006, 800 Australians from as young as 12 to 37 years of age have gathered on diamonds around Australia to compete for their state and to seek possible selection in an Australian team. >From 4-8 April 2006, young men and women will be taking part in what they view as one of the most competitive softball competitions which sees the very best from around Australia compete for the ultimate shields. The Australian Under 23 Mens Championship, hosted by the Queensland Softball Association, will see six teams (ACT, NSW, NSW Country, Qld, Vic, WA) compete for the Laing Harrow Shield. New South Wales took home the Shield in 2004 and the Australian Under 19s in 2005. The Australian Under 23 Womens Championship, hosted by Softball Canberra, will see eight teams (ACT, NSW, NSW Country, NT, Qld, Tas, Vic and WA) compete for the Joyce Lester Shield. New South Wales have proven to be the stronger side, winning the Shield back-to-back since its inception. The Under 23 championships were introduced in 2004 to provide an opportunity for athletes who were no longer eligible at Under 19 level to continue their participation at a higher level and provide a pathway into open State and National teams.
