Subject: Canada secures 8-1 victory over Thunder FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE June20th, 2008 Canada secures 8-1 victory over Thunder (Chicago,IL) The Senior Womens National Team had an impressiveperformance at the Pro Tour last night, defeating the Rockford Thunder 8-1 inthe opening game of the second series. The game, which was played atPlayers Park in Roscoe, IL, saw Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) scorethree runs, while pitchers Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, BC) and Dione Meier (Saskatoon,SK) allowed only three hits and one run on the night. TeamCanada wasted no time, gaining an advantageous 5-0 lead after the first twoinnings. In the top of the first, Matthews crossed home plate when Jennifer Yee(North Delta, BC) doubled to left centre field. First baseman, Sheena Lawrick(Calgary, AB) then registered two RBIs when she sent one over the fence,allowing both Yee and herself to score. Midway through the second inning, NoemieMarin (Acton-Vale, QC) drew a walk and advanced tosecond base before recording a run. Matthews also tallied a run on an RBIsingle by Erin McLean (Whitby, ON). Itwasnt until the fourth inning that Team Canada widened the scoring gapbetween itself and the Thunder even more. With bases loaded, Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam,BC) forced a walk, giving Matthews her third run of the game. In the nextplay, Lawrick singled, allowing McLean to score. Afterpitching five innings and recording a only two hits and zero errors, Regula wasrelieved by Meier, who closed out the game with a single run in the bottom ofthe sixth inning. Before the score was settled, McLean added one more run whenshe homered to left field, making it 8-1 for Canada.
