Subject: Canada's_bats_go_silent_in_5-1_semi-final_loss_to_Australi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 8th, 2008 Canada’s bats go silent in 5-1 semi-final lossto Australia (Kitchener, ON) – Australian pitcher TanyaHarding held the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team to only three hitsas the Aussies took a measure of revenge on the red and white with a 5-1 win. Canadahad beaten Australia 8-2 in the first game of the round-robin. The losseliminated Canada from the Tri Nations Cup, as Australia moved on to theChampionship game to face Japan. Australia opened the scoring in the top of the thirdinning, when Kerry Wyborn smacked a two-out RBI triple out of MeganTimpf’s (Port Dover, ON) reach in right field. However, most of thedamage came in the top of the fifth, when Stacey Porter smacked a three-runhomerun to right field, immediately followed by a solo blast by NatalieTitcume. Canada showed signs of life in the bottom of the inning when leadoffhitter Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) reached on an error and Kaleigh Rafter(Guelph, ON) walked. Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) later ripped an RBI singleup the middle to push Bradley home. However, Canada was unable to get anythingelse going. Starting pitcher Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, BC) threwtwo flawless innings without giving a hit, striking out two batters. RobinMackin (Newmarket, ON) had a difficult outing, allowing five runs on six hitsin two and one third innings of work. Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) followedwith one and two thirds innings of hitless relief, before Dione Meier(Saskatoon, SK) mopped up the final inning, allowing one hit. Erin Cumpstone collected a pair of singles for Canada,while Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) added a double in the seventh inning forCanada’s only hits. All three teams will participate at the Canada Cupfrom July 12-20 in Surrey, BC. Ladéfaite a éliminé le Canada de la Coupe Trois Nations, alors quel’Australie a disputé la grande finale avec le Japon.
