Subject: Canada closes round robin with 8-2 victory over Australia FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 18, 2008 Canada closes round robin with 8-2victory over Australia (Surrey, BC) - It was an impressive outing for the Senior WomensNational Team last night at the Canada Cup, as the squad wrapped up the roundrobin by beating Australia 8-2 in front of a huge home field crowd. Thevictory advanced Canadas record to 6-0, placing them at the head of thered pool. After dropping the semi-final game to Australiaat the Tri Nations Cup earlier in the month, last nights meeting broughtwith it a brewing contention, but the Senior Women made their presence known.Team Canada was first to get on the board in the bottom of the second inningwhen Sheena Lawrick (Calgary.AB) doubled and scored on a single by Alison Bradley (Pinkerton,ON). In the fifth inning, with two out, Canada scoredanother four runs thanks to some timely hitting by Melanie Matthews (Surrey,BC),Erin Mclean (Whitby,ON)and a homerun by JenniferYee (North Delta, BC). Australia responded in the top of the sixth frame byrecording two runs on a Canadian miscue and scoring the only two runs againstthe team since the beginning of the tournament. The bottom of the same inning, Lawrick and Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph,ON) both singled and capitalized on another Aussie error to score two of thethree runs in the frame. Canada would eventually close out the night witheight runs on nine hits and the 8-2 win. Robin Mackin (Newmarket,ON)got the start for Team Canada in the circle and captured the win, while Danielle Lawrie (Langley,BC)threw the final half inning and managed five more outs. Due to Team Canadas first place finish inthe red pool, the squad will take on the fourth place finisher in the whitepool, the Washington Absolute Blast. The playoff game will take placetoday, July 18th at 3:30p.m. PDT.
