Subject: Canada_earns_bronze_medal_at_the_Canada_Cup_/_Le_Canada_se -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE July21, 2008 Canadaearns bronze medal at the Canada Cup (Surrey,BC) - It took a couple of the worlds best pitchers to keep the Canadian teamfrom moving on to the finals of the 2008 Canada Cup. After losing Saturdaynight to the hardest thrower in the world in Yukiko Ueno for Japan, Canada wasput into the position of needing a win to move on to the finals. Australia cameout with everything they had by starting Melanie Roche in the circle, arguablyone of the best pitchers in the world. Afteran early walk and homerun by Stacey Porter in the first inning, the pitchersand defense took over for a couple of innings. Aninsurance run was scored by the Australian team in the top of the fourthinning. Team Canada got on the board in the fifth with a leadoff hit byCaitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) followed by a triple to left field by MelanieMatthews (Surrey, BC). A few more chances came to the Canadians in the sixthand seventh innings but the red and white was unable to score, giving Australiathe 3-1 win. CaitlinLever went three-for-three while Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) and MelanieMatthews each contributed two hits. Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) alsoadded a hit on the night. Settlingin after the first inning, Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) had a strong outingfor the Canadians, pitching five complete innings giving up just two hits whilestriking out six. Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, BC) came in for the final twoinnings, striking out four of the eight batters she faced. JenniferYee, Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) and Melanie Matthews were all selected to theAll-Star team as a result of their performance in the round robin portion ofthe tournament. Jennifer Yee was also the recipient of the top hitteraward presented after the final game of the tournament. Inthe Championship game, Team Japan beat Australia 4-2 to take the 2008 CanadaCup title. Canada travels to Japan on Tuesday for training, exhibitiongames and final preparations for the Beijing Olympics, which will be playedfrom August 12-21.
