Subject: Northern Ontario Championships;Local girls head south;game 4 semi final series "B";All Ontario Native -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Members of the fourth estate Al's Fastball Sudbury Star Northern Life MCTV Big Daddy Radio Channel 10 Persona Sudbury Sports.Com Greater City of Sudbury Rick McDonald Executive Friends and fans of fastball PICKEREL RIVER CARDINALS CAPTURE THE NORTHERN ONTARIO FASTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS Some fifteen games later after the Northern got underway on Friday August the 15th , it took extra innings to determine the 2008 Champions. Semi final results: In game one of the semi finals on Sunday morning the Magnatewan Native Sons defeated the two time defending champions 5-4 in one extra inning. Percy Tobobundong started for the Native Sons and was relieved in the 7th inning by Peter Mackenzie who got the victory.Matt Tobobundong scored the winning run in the top of the 8th inning when Walter Tobobundung reached first base on a fielder choice.Cory Stolar pitched an excellent game for the Dog House North Stars fanning 13 batters but was tagged with the loss.Craig Brown led the way for the winners with a 3 for 4 performance at the bat (double,triple).Walter Tobobondung also hit a two run shot for the Native Sons. Joel Belanger hit a solo for the North Stars and finished the weekend wit a sizzling 813 average and 5 home runs. In the second semi final , the Pickerel River Cardinals got the better of Whitefish Lake First Nation Steelers 7 to 4.Jonathan Contin went the distance for the Cardinals giving up 11 hits and fanning 4 batters.Lionnel Solomon(tagged with the loss) started for the Steelers but gave way to Al Guenette . Jonathan Contin led the way for the winners with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate with teammate J.P. Miron hitting 3 for 5 while Justin Nootchtai was perfect for the Steelers at 4 for 4 (1 triple). Championship game Pickerel River Cardinals VS Magnatewan Native Sons This game was a tightly contested game throughout as both teams exchanged runs forcing one extra inning to decide the champion. In the top of the extra inning the Cardinals scored two runs while the Native Sons could only reply with one in the bottom giving the Cardinals the championship 7 to 6.Jonathan Contin once again went all the way for the champions scattering 11 hits and fanning 3 batters. Peter Mackenzie also went all the`way for the Native Sons giving up 15 hits and striking out 7 batters . J.P. Miron led the way for Pickerel River going 3 for 3 with a walk while Walter Tobobundong hit 2 for 4 (solo home run) in a losing cause for the Native Sons . The date is already set for the fourth annual Northern Ontario Fastball Championships for ladies and men in 2009. It will be on the weekend of August 14th to 16th. The entry fee for 2009 has been set at $380 . Put that date on your colander and enter your team ,The deadline for entry fee and roster is set for Wednesday August the 5th.All cheques and money orders should be made out to Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League and mailed to : 4th Annual Northern Ontario Fastball League c/o Roger Legendre, Convener 968 Jeanne D'Arc Street Hanmer , Ontario The prize money awards will be determined by the number of teams entered. THREE SUDBURY TEAMS HEAD SOUTH FOR THE PROVINCIALS Prior to heading to Southern Ontario for the Provincials , three ladies fastball teams took on teams from North Bay in exhibition at the Delki Dozzi Sports Complex on August 16th. In the opening game the novice (13 and 14 year olds) under the direction of Micky Chartrand the Sudbury Junior Dragons squeezed by their counterpart from North Bay 7-6 .Cammie Belanger was the winner going the first three innings and fanning 7 batters and giving up only two hits and two earned runs.Maxime Oullette hit 2 for 4 for the Dragons In the Bantam game (15 and 16 year olds) the North Bay girls easily handled the Sudbury girls 9-1 while in the midget contest (17 and older) the North Bay squad got the better of Sudbury to the tune of 22-1. We wish good luck to all three of the Sudbury girls who are heading to Southern Ontario this weekend for the Provincial championships.The Novice will be in Burlington , the Bantams in Newmarket and the Midgets in Guelph. We will have results for next Monday. RICK McDONALD FASTBALL SEMI FINALS The fourth game in the best of five series "B" semi final goes Wednesday night in Whitefish at 8 PM .Should the Pickerel River Cardinals defeat the Garson Hounds , there would be a fifth and deciding game on Thursday night in Azilda . Should the series end on Wednesday night then the Championship final series best of 5 would get underway Thursday night in Azilda . THE ALL ONTARIO NATIVE FASTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS The final numbers have come in for the tournament which gets underway this coming Friday August the 22nd in Garson , Lively and Whitefish Lake .. In Garson it will be at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park , in Lively at the Hillcrest ball field and in Whitefish at the ball field .There will be 24 teams in action this weekend : 14 men's teams , 5 ladies teams and 5 senior men's teams.
