Oshawa, Ont. â The Durham College womenâs fastball team were crowned the 2008 CAN-AM Classic champions on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Monroe Tribunes 3-0 in the championship final. The tournament was a big success for Durham as they went 4-0 enroute to the tournament title. The Lords stepped up their defence in their four wins as they did not allow a single run in the tournament, utscoring their opponents 20-0. Monroe, who Durham defeated in the finals are the three-time defending NJCAA Division III national champions and had won the tournament the past two seasons.> Danielle Smith (Oshawa, Ont.) of the Lords was named the tournament top pitcher while teammate Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) was awarded tournament MVP honours. TOURNAMENT SCOREBOARD Championship Round Results: Championship Game â Durham defeated Monroe 3-0 Third Place Game: Mohawk defeated Seneca 4-3 Championship MVP: Erin Dewey, Durham Championship Top Pitcher: Danielle Smith, Durham Round Robin Results Game One: Durham defeated Seneca 7-0 Game Two: Monroe defeated Mohawk 5-0 Game Three: Mohawk defeated Seneca 4-3 Game Four: Durham defeated Monroe 4-0 Game Five: Monroe defeated Seneca 14-1 Game Six: Durham defeated Mohawk 6-0 GAME SUMMARIES Championship Final: Durham defeated Monroe 3-0 What had the makings of a pitchers duel from the start did not disappoint. Danielle Smith went the distance for the Lords while her counterpart Lindsey Grace (2008 All-American) did the same for Monroe. In the sixth inning with the game scoreless, the Tribunes threatened, but were unable to capitalize, stranding runners on second and third. The Lords were able to take advantage, as they touched up Grace for three runs, one earned in the bottom of the inning. That is all the Lords would need as Smith closed the door in the seventh to pick up the victory over the Tribunes. Smith picked up the win, Grace the loss. Danielle Smith was named Tournament Top pitcher as she picked up two wins without allowing a run. Lords infielder Erin Dewey was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Consolation Game: Mohawk defeated Seneca 6-3 The Mohawk Mountaineers scored early and coasted the rest of the way to pick up the victory in the consolation match-up. Mohawk scored three runs in the first and two in the second, and that was all starting pitcher Jenny Koschanow needed to pick up the win. The Mountaineers were led offensively by Jenna Pletzer who had three RBIâs and a run scored. The Sting bats were silent for most of the game, except for a three run fourth inning. Leading the way for the Sting was Erin Belanger who had two doubles, two RBIâs and a run scored. Ashley Evelyn was on the losing end of the decision for Seneca. Round Robin: Monroe defeated Seneca 14-1 The Monroe Tribunes went on a scoring spree to book themselves a place in the finals. The Tribunes plated 10 runs in the first two innings as they sent eight batters to the plate in each of the innings. Monroe was lead by Amanda Prouty who went 3-for-3 and three runs scored. Shortstop Amy Nowak chipped in an RBI triple helping pitcher Ashley Hall pick up the victory. Seneca was led by pitcher Karen Pilkington who contributed two singles despite taking the loss. The lone Seneca run was driven in by Megan Oliver. Round Robin: Durham defeated Mohawk 6-0 Pitcher Karie Neddo paced the Lords to yet another shutout as the Lords stamped their ticket to the tournament final. Once again the Lords offensive was an all around effort, with Erin Dewey, Erica Dewey, Shannon Ferguson, Danielle Smith and Neddo contributing hits and runs batted in. Jessica Roloson took the loss for the Mountaineers.
