Media Release 29 January 2006 Australia goes down to New Zealand in Gold Medal Game The Australian Open Men's team, Aussie Steelers went down to world number one New Zealand Black Sox 5-3 in the gold medal play-off at the Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship today. . The Black Sox's bats came out strong against the Aussie Steelers defence scoring one run in the first inning with Australia unable to score. It was not the case in the second with the Aussie Steelers defence shutting down the Black Sox bats three up three down. Kris Keifel led the Aussie Steelers charge at lead off with a hard ball between third and short stop, getting himself on base. Aaron Cockman hit a single to right field to move Keifel around. Next at bat Joel Southam read the pitch well, taking a base on balls to have all the bases loaded and designated player Paul Maisey at the plate. Maisey true to form, hitting two runners in with a ground ball to left field lifting the Aussie Steelers. A change to the line up was made putting in the experienced bat of Terry Downes who hit a huge fly ball to centre field sacrificing himself but scoring the run to put Australia in the lead 3-1. New Zealand were quick to reply with Travis Wilson hitting a long ball home run over the centre field fence, narrowing the margin 2-3 at the top of the third. The Aussie Steelers were unable to over power the Black Sox brilliant offence and defence with New Zealand batter Brad Rona hitting a two run home run in the top of the fourth and his team mates hitting a further run in the sixth to take the gold medal 5-3.
