Bat dominates ball on day one of women's national club champs Thursday March 23rd 2006 Big hitting and wide score lines has been a theme on day one of the New Zealand Community Trust Womenýs National Club Championships at Foundation Park, Christchurch today. The top ranked sides have set a blistering pace today leaving the lesser ranked sides in their wake. In section A Northcote and two time defending champions Te Aroha have both had big wins while in section B Albion, Wainui and Auckland Marist are the teams to watch. Northcote opened the day with an impressive 15-0 victory over Richmond Keas and then backed that up in the last game of the day with a 13-1 win over Saints. The bats were on fire for Northcote on the opening day as they picked up a mammoth 30 hits from their two games. Leading the way was Jackie Smith with six hits from eight at bats in the two games along with Maleme Williams who picked up five hits from six trips to the batters box. Defending champs Te Aroha were just as they convincing as they demolished Burnham Red Shots 15-0 and Poneke Kilbirnie by the same score line and then fought hard for a 7-4 win over Waitakere Bears. Setting the pace for Te Aroha with the bat was Shirley Povey who was in fine form with the bat against Burnham picking up three triples. In section B the fight to make the top two is going to be very tight with five top ranked title contenders having to fight for just two semi final places. Albion, Wainui and Auckland Marist had the best start today all finishing with two wins. While Miramar and Parklands Christchurch United both recorded one loss today and will have to fight back hard tomorrow if they are to remain in title contention. Round robin play in the tournament continues tomorrow with Wainui looking to have a tough day ahead of them in section B as they take on both Auckland Marist and Miramar.
