AK Marist v Wainui in womens national club final Sunday March 26th 2006 - 11:50am Auckland Marist will play Wainui in the final of the New Zealand Community Trust Womens National Club Championships at Foundation Park, Christchurch this afternoon. In the semi finals played this morning the unbeaten Auckland Marist team defeated Northcote 11-1 in five innings while Wainui won their way through to the final with a 5-2 win over the defending champions Te Aroha. Auckland Marist were in ominous form with the bat in the semi final as they scored two runs in the first inning, one more in the second, six in the third and two in the fifth. A star with the bat for Auckland Marist was Michelle Kingi who picked up three hits and two RBIs from four at bats while Fiona Timu had two hits and three RBIs from four trips to the plate. Auckland Marist was always in control of the game as they out hit Northcote 14 to five. Along with doing the job with the bat Kingi was also strong on the mound for Auckland Marist she faced 17 batters giving up just five hits and one walk while taking three strikeouts. For Northcote their only run came in the fourth inning when Katie Hetherington scored on a hit by Aroha Haretuku but it wasnt enough to get them into the game. On the mound for Northcote was Victoria Reyland. The other semi final between Wainui and Te Aroha went right down to the wire with the scores all locked up at 2-2 going into the seventh inning. Batting in the top of the final inning and with two down Wainui brought the game alive first with Lici Hina picking up a single followed by a triple to Api Stone OKane to score one run and then an in the park home run by Aimee Gilbert to score two more runs to give her side a three run advantage going into the bottom of the inning. Te Aroha battled hard in the bottom of the inning to pull back the deficit getting one runner on base but they couldnt turn the game around. On the mound for Wainui was Trish Hina while Jessica Hau pitched the game for Te Aroha. Going into the 3pm final Auckland Marist could hold the advantage they are unbeaten in the tournament and when the two finalists met in round robin play Auckland Marist came out on top 3-2.
