-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White Sox take a hit at world championships Wednesday August 30th 2006 A fifth inning blow out from China has seen them take a commanding 6-0victory over the New Zealand Community Trust White Sox at the 2006Womens Softball World Championships today. For much of the game in Beijing the White Sox were competitive with thehome team as they fought hard and denied China a number of scoringopportunities. China, who are unbeaten in the tournament didnt register on thescoreboard until the fourth inning when they picked up one run. Thedamage for the White Sox came in the fifth inning when the home teamscored four runs before adding one more in the sixth to round out thegame. Sheree Cartwright started the game on the mound for the White Sox andwhile she sometimes found herself in trouble with bases loaded early inthe game and none out she fought hard to get out each situation withoutdamage. After picking up one run in the fourth inning China were strong again inthe fifth and were looking dangerous as they scored two runs. White Soxcoach Mike Walsh then made the call to take Cartwright off the mound andreplace her with Michal Tangaroa. Making her world championships debut it was a big call to bring Tangaroainto the game but it didnt pay the dividends Walsh was looking for.China went on to score two more runs in the fifth inning and another onein the sixth putting them beyond the reach of the New Zealanders. New Zealand had their chances in the game with the most promising scoringopportunity coming in the second inning when the White Sox loaded up thebases with two down but the couldnt convert it. Despite the loss today the White Sox still stand a good chance toreaching their goal of finishing in the top four from their pool toqualify for the championships playoffs. The White Sox play the defending champions USA tomorrow at 2.30pm but thecrucial games will come on the following two days.
