Subject: Canada eliminates Chinese Taipei with win -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 28th, 2006 Canada eliminates Chinese Taipei with win (Enschede, Netherlands) - The Canadian National Junior Women's Team came up with a gutsy performance and was able to keep their medal hopes alive with a tight 4-3 win over Chinese Taipei. Canada had ten hits but left ten runners on base and needed a sixth inning run to win the game. Canada opened the scoring early in the top of first inning, scoring three runs on five hits. With two outs, Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, ON) beat out an infield chopper to short, and Charlotte Dolan (Coquitlam, BC) drilled a single to left field. Robyn Draper (Brampton, ON) then lined a 2-0 pitch past third base to score LeClair. Carly Moir (White Rock, BC) followed by drawing a walk to load the bases before Heidi Purtzer (Scottsdale, Arizona) lined a single to left centre to score Dolan and Draper, giving Canada an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Taipei answered with two runs of their own on two singles and two walks. They were then able to tie the game in the second inning, as the lead off batter struck out on a change up in the dirt but Charlotte Dolan couldn't find the handle. The next batter doubled to right centre and scored the runner from first, and Taipei tied the game 3-3. Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth when Chinese Taipei loaded the bases with two outs after a single and two walks. Caira was able to get out of the jam by forcing a ground ball to short stop Pearl Coleshill (Toronto, ON) who flipped the ball to Jessica Tieszen (South Surrey, BC) at second for the third out. Canada then took the lead in the sixth when Tieszen led off with a single to centre field and was moved over to second by a Pearl Coleshill sacrifice bunt. Richelle McGarva (Cloverdale, BC) followed with a single past the short stop and Tieszen scored when the left fielder bobbled the ball. Canada was able to hold on for the win in the bottom of the seventh after Jenna Caira forced three straight groundballs to end the game, capped off by a great diving play by Carly Moir who was able to throw the runner out at first. Today's game was a 100% team effort said short stop Pearl Coleshill. We got off with a strong start, and even after Chinese Taipei came back to tie it we stayed together as a team and came up with the big win. If we continue to play like this I believe our trip will only get better. Today's game started off great added Charlotte Dolan. Energy was amazing early on. It was a great effort by all. Everyone believed in their abilities. Jenna Caira pitched seven solid innings allowing three runs on five hits with five strike outs and four walks. Canada will be back in action tomorrow (9:00am, ET) as they will face the losing team of the United States/Venezuela game which will take place later today (11:30am, ET).
