Subject: Pan_Am_Games:_Canada_Awarded_Silver_Medal_/_Jeux_Panamér9r -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE July28th, 2007 PanAm Games: Canada Awarded Silver Medal (Cityof Rock, Brazil) Bad weather was the story again in City of Rock, Brazil.Canada was scheduled to play Venezuela at 9:00am EST this morning, but anotherday of rain caused the game to be delayed to 2:00am EST instead. Come gametime, the rain did not stop and the field conditions were very poor, forcingthe XV Pan American Games Rio 2007 Committee (CO-RIO) to cancel the medalround. Asa result, the United States were awarded with the gold medal, as they hadqualified for the Grand Final with a 7-0 win over Canada last night. SinceCanada and Venezuela were not able to play their game to decide who would meetthe United States for the gold medal, both teams were awarded with the silvermedal. It was the Canadian softball teams third consecutive silver medal atthe Pan American Games. Thecancellation of the medal round put an end to a very difficult week forsoftball at the Pan American Games. After a violent windstorm caused damages tothe main stadium, all games were cancelled on Monday, which was supposed to bethe first day of competition. After rain washed out all the games on Tuesday aswell, CO-RIO was forced to change the tournament schedule to a two poolround-robin format to be played on two separate fields. Teams were finally onthe main field on Wednesday morning to open the Pan Am schedule, but poor fieldconditions on the second field forced schedule changes once again and delayedyet another group of games.
