Subject: Labatt 2007 Senior Men's Canadian Fastpitch Championships -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Press Release-Grumpy Stump Coach Jim Dunphy has named 15 players who will form the core of the Grumpy Stump team that will represent Softball Newfoundland and Labrador in the Labatt 2007 Senior Mens Canadian Fastpitch Championships. The Championships will be played August 26th to September 2nd at the Caribou Memorial Complex in St. Johns. Roebothan McKay Marshall and Impact Signs, the other two Newfoundland and Labrador teams entered in the 12-team competition, were named earlier. Overall, the 12 clubs contain many of the best softball players in the world. Dunphy, named Canadas top softball coach for 2006, will have Jack Ring as assistant coach. The Grumpy Stump roster includes: Jamie Peddle, catcher, is a fine receiver who has represented Softball Newfoundland and Labrador in two national senior championships after playing for 11 seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League. He has backstopped three teams to provincial titles and has been a member of four League champions. Steven Rice, outfield/catcher, is basically an outfielder who can fill in as a catcher. He has played 15 seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League and represented Softball Newfoundland and Labrador at two national senior championships. He has played for one provincial champion and two League champions. Darren Zack, pitcher, is one of the greatest softball pitchers ever. The Ojibwa pitcher, with a towering 64, 270-pound frame, has dominated the fastball circuit for almost two decades, leading Canada to two Pan-American Games gold medals. In 1995, the same year Softball Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the national senior mens tournament, Zacks Toronto Gators became kings of the softball world when they won the ISC title as he fanned 150 batters in ten wins. The 46-year-old is perhaps the most decorated softball player ever, having won numerous national, international and aboriginal titles. In the twilight of a brilliant career, he currently plays for Horse Lake, Alberta. Sean Cleary, pitcher, is one of the most promising young players in Canada both as a pitcher and as a hitter, He pitched Newfoundland and Labrador to the 2006 national junior title and is a main cog in the 2007 effort to repeat. He has played six seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League. Donny King, pitcher, is a veteran player with 16 seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League where he was named Comeback Player Of The Year for 2006. A member of one provincial championship club, he has twice represented Softball Newfoundland and Labrador in national senior championships. Robbie Greene, pitcher, has been playing in the St. Johns Senior Mens League for eight years and posted the best pitching record in 2003 and 2006. He was a member of one provincial championship club and twice represented Softball Newfoundland and Labrador in national senior championships. Sean Cadigan, outfield/pitcher, has one League title to his credit from nine seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League. The Leagues Comeback Player Of The Year for 2005, he has been named a League All-star and is playing in his second national senior championships. Colin Swain, infield, has one League title and one provincial championship to his credit from two seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League. Paul Maher, infield, is playing his first year in the St. Johns Senior Mens League and has one provincial championship on his record. Fergie Griffiths, infield, has been a member of three provincial championship teams and one of three League championship teams during his nine years in the St. Johns Senior Mens League. Keith Coady, infield, has been selected as a League All-star twice during his 12 seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League where hes played for three championship teams. Representing Softball Newfoundland and Labrador in his third national senior championships, hes been a member of two provincial champions. Keith Maynard, infield, won one St. Johns Senior Mens League championship in ten seasons and is playing in his fourth national senior championships. He was a member of one provincial championship club. Brian Roche, outfield, was the St. Johns Senior Mens Come Back Player Of The Year for 2003 and twice selected as a League All-star during his 11 seasons. A member of a League and a provincial championship team, he is playing in his third national senior championship. Joe Fagan, outfield, has played 25 seasons in the St. Johns Senior Mens League and was the first player to perform in 500 League games. A four time All-star selection, he has represented Softball Newfoundland and Labrador in six national senior championships and has two provincial and two League titles to his credit. Evan Connors, outfield, during his four years in the St. Johns Senior Mens League has one League and one provincial championship on his record as he plays in his first national senior tournament.
