Subject: NL, Scarborough win playoff games; set up rematch -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- N.L., Scarborough win opening playoff games at Jr. Mens championship East Hants-Quebec, P.E.I.-Simcoe battle to continue on Saturday at 9 and 11 a.m. BY PAT HEALEY MEDIA OFFICER SUMMERSIDE - Newfoundland and Labradors Kellys Pub Canadians and the Scarborough Wolverines both won their opening playoff games here Friday night at the 2007 Causeway Bay Junior Mens Fast pitch championship. By both teams winning, it sets up a rematch of the two teams that met in round robin play, a game that decided first place when NL won 7-3. The Canadians defeated Elmira Advance Millwrights 8-4 while later the Wolverines edged the Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks 3-1. Against Elmira, Jason Hill left the week-long tournament in style going a perfect 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, a walk and two RBI. Hill leaves Saturday morning to join his International Softball Congress team the Farm Tavern of Wisconsin at the ISC World Tournament in Kitchener. Brad Ezekiel was also perfect at the plate in three at bats, driving home a run. Justin Gill (2-5, three runs scored), Stephen Strapp (1-4, RBI) and Ken Gosse (1-3, two RBI) were also hot at the dish for the defending champions. Elmira scored three runs on errors to NL first basemen Gary Bruce, followed by a passed ball by catcher Stephen Strapp in their half of the second. It all happened after what appeared to be a third out for the inning. Pitcher Sean Cleary threw to Bruce, who bobbled the ball as he and the Elmira runner, Josh Brohman (1-4), made contact. This allowed Ben Wideman (1-3) and Ron Dean (2-3, RBI) to be plated on the play giving the Ontario runner ups a 3-2 lead. Jack McLaren, losing pitcher Dan Martin and Travis Martin each had 1-for-3 summaries. MVP Sean Cleary went the distance giving up four runs - one earned - on seven hits while sitting down eight. Martin pitched a complete game, surrendering eight runs - five earned - on 12 hits while walking six. NL had a chance to open the scoring much more then they did, loading the bases in each of the third, sixth and seventh innings but failing to cash the runners in. Elmira will now play the winner of the East Hants Henchmen-Quebec game scheduled for a 9 a.m. first pitch here. Putnam a fireballer for Scarborough in playoff win Scarboroughs Andrew Putnam was on fire again, throwing a complete game one hitter in a 4-1 win with a Colby Bierle home run accounting for the Diamondbacks only run. Putnam whiffed nine batters in coming close to pitching a perfect game. Powering the offense at the plate for the Ontario champions was Brandon Horn (2-3, run scored, RBI, hit by pitch) and Cam Haulk (1-4, solo home run) Kyle Hyrcuik had a single in the top of the seventh. Brady Woods, who was solid on the slab, was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on six hits in five and one third innings. Kyle Hyrcuik came on in relief. The loss means Saskatchewan will await the winner of P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins-ONT 3 Simcoe set for 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
