Subject: Heat, Ont 1, NS 2 and P.E.I. final four left at Eastern Canadians in Alberton -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Host Heat pull out thrilling victory to advance at Eastern Canadians Palmerston (Ont 1), Cole Harbour Comets (NS2) and P.E.I.s Cornwall Cougars also advance to Sunday action BY PAT HEALEY ALBERTON - The host Prince County Heat didnt take the easy way in advancing to the semifinal round here at the Tignish Credit Union Midget Girls Eastern Canadian championships Saturday. Several mental errors by the fielders in the top of the seventh erased a 4-2 lead and knotted the score and almost came back to haunt the Host team and P.E.I. champion, if not for the bats of Sarah Kennedy and Kayla Hackett in the 5-4 thrilling win over Ontario two rep, Halton Hills Hawks, before at least 250 people at Albertons school field. In the other semifinal games, Cole Harbour Comets dispatched Ontario 3 Stratford Optimist 2-1 while the Ontario champion Palmerston Marlins mercied Cornwall/West Royalty Cougars 7-0. Prince County will now face Nova Scotia 2, Cole Harbour Comets, in the first semifinal Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The winner of that game will face P.E.Is Cornwall Cougars at 11 a.m. for the right to face Palmerston Marlins (ONT 1) in the final at 1 p.m. Kennedy drove home Angie Poirier with the go ahead run in the sixth that started the rally from a 2-1 deficit and Hackett finished it off in the home half of the seventh after the Summerside-based team surrendered the lead on four fielders choice and an error in the top half of the last inning. Kayla Paynter started the inning off with a single and was moved along on a Natalie Derasp single that sent here to third base setting the stage for Hacketts heroics. Hackett, a third basemen, hit a fastball from Halton Hills pitcher Karrie Neddo to left field that brought home a joyful Paynter with the games winning run and sending the pro-Heat crowd into a frenzy. Kennedy (2-3, run scored), Paynter (1-4), Hackett (1-4), Taylore Matheson (2-3, RBI) and Ashley Praught (1-2, run scored) also contributed in the win. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning, Halton Hills took the lead 2-1 on an RBI triple by Kristie Jackson. Jackson was thrown out at home trying to stretch the hit into a inside the park home run. In the top of the seventh, fielders choices to Jenn Riddell and Shelby Davis plated Neddo and Jamie Campbell to knot the score into the Heats final at bat. Matheson earned the win giving up six hits, walking three and fanning two batters. Neddo took the loss, striking out four allowing five hits. At Memorial Park, Ontario champion Palmerston Marlins broke open a close game with a five run sixth en route to the 7-0 mercy rule win over Cornwall/West Royalty Cougars. Brittany Horton (3-3, three RBI, inside the park home run, double) and Jess Doerr (1-3, double, RBI, run scored) had the big bats. Charlie Johnston suffered the loss for the Cougars, going four innings allowing three hits and two runs. Palmerston advances to the final with the win while PEI will face the winner of the Cole Harbour-Prince County game. Game times are9 11 am and the championship goes at 1 p.m. At OLeary, the Comets edged past Stratford 2-1. Holly Denny earned the pitching win striking oyut five batters. No other details were available. Inj their final round robin game against Saint John Selects (N.B. 1), the game started with a wacky first two innings as Cole Harbour opened a 7-0 lead on five hits and two errors before giving up seven runs of their own in the top of the second as Saint John sent 12 batters to the dish.
