Subject: Horton, Johnston, Denny nab Midget Girls EC awards Horton, Denny, Johnston nab top awards at Midget Girls BY PAT HEALEY ALBERTON - Players from Prince Edward Island, Ontario and Nova Scotia were the top winners during the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon following the championship game here at the Tignish Credit Union Midget Girls Eastern Canadian Championships. Brittany Horton of the champion Palmerston Marlins was the biggest winner of them all, taking home the Top Batter and MVP Round robin awards. She batted 9-for-13 in the round robin. Stephanie Soucy of Extreme Laval was closest to Horton, batting 8-for-13. Holly Denny, a native of Whycogamah in Cape Breton, earned the MVP playoff hardware after an amazing display of stamina in pitching three straight games, 24 innings, and fanning 33. She also pitched two games Saturday, meaning she threw five of her teams past six games. Cornwall Bad News Broad ace Charlie Johnston earned the top pitcher award with an era of 1.75, throwing 26 innings, 11 runs, 28 strikeouts and six walks. The silver medaling Cole Harbour Comets of Nova Scotia also took home lots of extra awards, earning two All star nods. Kylie Boudreau as catcher and Jill McCracken in the outfield heard their named called for those awards. Pitcher Meghan Brown of the Nova Scotia one champion Shubenacadie Stealers was named all star pitcher with five runs over 20 innings pitched and 17 strikeouts.
