FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 10, 2010 USA bounces back with big win over Canada at Canadian Open Series
(Surrey, BC) After Canada took victories in each of the first two games, the United States bounced back in a big way, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning and eventually taking the game by a score of 12-5 in five innings. The two teams will play their final game in Surrey, BC on Sunday at 3:30pm PDT before flying to Whitehorse, YK for another pair of games on July 13 and 14. Team USA did not waste any time lighting up the scoreboard, as Chelsea Bramlett and Brittany Lastrapes started the inning with singles. Bramlett advanced to third on a fly out to deep centerfield, and Lastrapes stole second before Kaitlin Cochran hit a three-run homerun. Megan Langenfeld followed that up with a solo homerun of her own, and after a single by Ashley Charters, Valerie Arioto hit the Americans' third homerun of the inning for a quick 6-0 lead. However, Canada came right back to cut into that lead in the bottom half of the inning. Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) led off with a single and scored on a double by Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York). Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC) and Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) both singled to load the bases before Jen Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) forced a full count walk to bring in a run. Later in the inning, Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) hit a grounder that eluded the shortstop, allowing two more runs to score to cut the lead to 6-4. The following inning, Canada cut into the two run lead when Melanie Matthews led off with a single and later scored on a groundout by Sheena Lawrick, allowing Canada to reduce the lead to 6-5. However, USA scored four runs in the top of the fourth and added two more in the top of the fifth, and relief pitcher Angela Tincher kept the Canadian bats at bay as the game ended by a final score of 12-5 in five innings due to the run-ahead rule. Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) took the loss in the pitcher's circle, allowing six runs on six hits while only getting an out. Tina Andreana (Oakville, ON) pitched two innings of relief allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Marina Demore (Richmond, BC) allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits and one walk with two strikeouts in two innings pitched, while Junior team call-up Shanna Wilson (Peterborough, ON) allowed one hit and a walk with one strikeout in two thirds of an inning. At the plate, Melanie Matthews led the way with two hits, while Caitlin Lever, Jenn Yee, Erin Cumpstone and Sheena Lawrick each chipped in with one. The two teams will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm PDT at Softball City.
