Durham College claimed gold at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Womens Fastball Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 10-1 victory over the St. Clair Saints in the championship game. The gold medal victory marks the Lords 15th provincial title in womens fastball, the most of any college in the OCAA. In the gold medal game against the two-time defending champion Saints, the Lords turned to Kristine Miles on the mound. The Whitby native did not disappoint the hometown faithful as she pitched the complete game victory, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out five St. Clair batters. Miles was named the championship top pitcher for her gold medal performance. The Lords bats were red hot on Saturday as they scored ten runs off of 13 hits. Janna Hagan (Sherwood Park, AB) went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, as she was named the player of the game. Lords co-captain Shannon Ferguson was 3-for-4 in the finals with a run scored. Overall, Ferguson was 7-for-9 (.777 average), as the Brockville native earned championship MVP honours. Erica and Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) also had multi-hit games for Durham in the gold medal game as they combined to go 4-for-9 with four runs and three RBIs. Coming off a bronze medal performance at the national championship in Saskatoon, the Lords carried their winning ways into the OCAA Championship, outscoring their opponents 32-3 enroute to the gold medal. Head coach of the Lords Jim Nemish, who picked up his twelfth OCAA Championship as the Durham Lords head coach, said that his team worked extremely hard throughout the entire season and really came together as a team to win the provincial title. The Lords were perfect in OCAA action throughout the season, going 13-0 during the regular season and championship. St. Clair advanced to the gold medal game after defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers 10-6 earlier in the day. The silver medal by St. Clair marks their sixth consecutive medal at the OCAA Womens Fastball Championship. 2010 marked the 30th anniversary of the OCAA womens fastball championship.
